What is the difference between rekeying and lock changing?

Depending on your situation you may choose to either have your locks rekeyed or changed completely. Lock changing is just as it sounds, removing the old lock hardware and installing new hardware. Rekeying, on the other hand, changes the existing lock to work with a new key.

Lock Changing

Changing the locks on one or multiple doors is a great choice if the existing lock hardware is worn. Over time with repeated use, some locking mechanisms can become faulty and not work as they once did. Eventually, the lock can stop working and you will need to call a locksmith to open the door and change the lock.

If your lock is showing signs of wear or not working as well as it once did, it may be a good idea to have it replaced before it causes more serious problems for you.

Another scenario you may need to have your locks replaced instead of rekeyed is if you lost your keys. In order to rekey a lock, you must have the original key. If you do not have access to the original key you will need to have your locks replaced.

Our mobile technicians are able to come to your location and remove the old locks, provide new quality locks, and install them for you. We use the industry’s most trusted lock brands and all of our new locks come with a guarantee. We offer this service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the Arlington metropolitan area.

Unlike lock changing, rekeying allows you to keep the existing lock and change the mechanism inside so it works with a different key. This is usually the less expensive option as new hardware does not need to be installed.

How does rekeying work?

Locks contain a cylinder, and inside that cylinder is a set of pins that unlatch when the proper key is inserted, which releases the lock. Rekeying works by rearranging the sequence of the pins to work with a new key, rendering the old key useless.

You can also have your locks rekeyed so the same key works with multiple locks. A couple example scenarios where this would be beneficial include:

  • Businesses that have multiple locked doors and employees with varying security clearance. With rekeying you can reduce the number of keys each employee must carry.
  • Reducing the amount of house keys you must carry. You could use the same key for your front, back, and side doors for example.

  • Master Rekeying

Master rekeying allows you to have one master key that can open multiple locks and sub-master keys that can work with certain locks but not others in the same system.

Let’s say for example you have three doors. In this example, the master key will unlock all 3 doors.

Now each of those doors can have their own sub-master key. A sub-master key, also referred to as a change key, will only work with locks that are exactly the same. So if each of the locks are different on the three doors in this example, a sub-master key from one door will not work for the other two doors. Each would need their own sub-master key. But the master key would unlock all three doors.

In other words, a master key system allows two or more keys to open the same lock.

The main benefit of a master key system is the convenience it brings. There are many applications where this would be beneficial. Take a large apartment complex for example. The landlord could have a master key that could unlock every apartment and door in the complex. Each tenant would have their own sub-master key that can only access their apartment.

Many retail businesses and other businesses that keep multiple doors locked benefit from master key systems as well. Before master key systems, employees had to carry many keys at a time, hundreds of keys in some cases. This is no longer necessary due to the convenience of master key systems.
