The Difference Between Lock Changing and Rekeying

Lock Changing

On an existing lock that has aged, changing your lock entirely may be your best option. General use and wear over time can compromise the functionality of the lock and the overall effectiveness. If your lock is giving you problems and is not working as well as it used to, it may be time to have the lock changed.

Rekeying

With rekeying, you don’t have to have the entire lock changed. You can keep the existing lock and only the interior mechanism needs to be adjusted in order to fit a new key. The pins will be reconfigured to work with a brand new key.

Master Rekeying

Master rekeying can be a solid investment for your business or home, giving you ease and efficiency. A master key system lets you have only one master key that opens multiple locks.

Sub-master keys are able to open some locks but not all of them. They are also known as change keys. If you have a master key system that has five locks, the master key can open all five while your sub-master or change keys will only be able to open a few of them.

Having a master key allows for convenience in a business where multiple people have varying levels of security privileges. For example, an owner or manager would be able to open all the doors to a business place with his or her master key while certain employees would only have access to some doors with their sub-master key

This cuts down on having to carry multiple keys at once and having to remember what key opens what door, which can lead to unnecessary confusion and a waste of time. Choosing a master rekeying plan for your home or business can lead to increased efficiency and peace of mind.
